SF and all that versus Science and all that

by webmaster on April 3, 2009

So, anyone think there’s any value in SF as opposed to Science? Well, maybe not science but what about technology? For instance, how many of you realised that the flip mobile phones are obviously based on the original Star Trek communicators? Or what about the Hitch Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy?

As the book itself says, the HHGTTG is a truly remarkable book – and the Doug Adams book is in fact such a thing. I predict bluetooth type electronic Babel Fish’s in the next five years for instance, and what about an electronic book that tells you everything about everything… any similarities to an internet who for most people is a Q&A system for everything, whether through Google or Wiki’s.

So what’s my point? Well, maybe a lot more people than we previously thought are intersted in Science and Technology, certainly in using them anyway. They are ingrained in popular culture – though normally as futuristic predictions… so can we use this to our advantage?
If a SF film told a story using completely up to date science instead of future science, would it be popular… maybe not a film – take too long to make: science moves on – but maybe a radio show or dare I say it a podcast!
