Apparently only 50% of people know or care about what goes on in Science and Technology in the world!
I’ve also read that about 10% are actual science professionals who understand fully what’s going on in the world – I think it’s a much smaller number than this…
In any case, there is a problem with making science accessible and understandable and even interesting to the general public in some way without letting journalists take over the role of science popularisers because too often they have done more that popularise it – they have dummed it down: so much so in fact that science popularisation has got a bad name with scientists.
though let’s not start a war with the journalists just yet – look at The Guardian (UK) or the New York Times science pages. These could actually be understood by everybody, not just the ‘10%’ so why don’t they read them? How do you get people to not just skip these pages on their way to the sports results???
Ideas on a postcard please….
