A week ago, I posted a podcast episode about science education which discussed activities of interested amateurs as well as the activities of the Centre for Talented Youth in Dublin City University. Today I read in the New York Times about a campaign to improve science and mathematics education for children in the United States of America.
It makes me sad to know that we could never do anything like this in Ireland. Unfortunately, not only do we not have the organisations like Discovery Communications, or TV shows like Sesame Street that could help promote it; but more fundamentally I think we lack the belief that something like this could be beneficial to us as a so-called Knowledge Economy, and we’re probably still suffering from recession myopia.
I asked the Department of Education & Science for a comment on this and at the time of writing this, had not heard back from them – either negatively or positively, that is. No surprise there I think, but I’ll keep trying. Maybe they’ll even be brave enough to come on Science Chat.
